How to Keep Your Hair Color Vibrant Between Salon Visits

The First 48 Hours Matter Most

The biggest mistake people make with fresh color is washing it too soon. After any color service — whether it is an all-over color, highlights, or balayage — wait at least 48 hours before shampooing. This gives the color molecules time to fully bond with your hair.

Switch to Color-Safe Products

Not all shampoos are created equal. Standard shampoos contain sulfates that strip color fast. A gentle, sulfate-free shampoo preserves your color while keeping your hair clean. At Salon Novo, we carry color-safe options from Intelligent Nutrients and O&M that our clients love — read more about why we choose natural products.

Turn Down the Temperature

Hot water opens the hair cuticle, which lets color fade faster. Rinse with cool or lukewarm water — especially at the end of your shower. It seals the cuticle and locks in vibrancy. It is a small change that makes a real difference.

Limit Heat Styling

Flat irons and curling wands above 350 degrees can break down color molecules. When you do use heat, always apply a thermal protectant and keep the temperature moderate. Air drying when possible is the kindest thing you can do for colored hair.

Shield Your Hair From the Sun

Sonoma gets over 250 days of sunshine a year. That UV exposure fades hair color just like it fades fabric. Wear a hat when you are out in the vineyards or at the farmers market, or use a leave-in product with UV protection.

Schedule Strategically

Most color services at Salon Novo are designed to grow out gracefully, but timing your appointments right keeps everything looking fresh. We recommend touch-ups every six to eight weeks for all-over color and every twelve to sixteen weeks for balayage.
